A 40-year-old man handed himself over to the police in connection with the murder of city official Wendy Kloppers. Kloppers worked for the City’s Environmental Affairs Department and she was busy with the Delft Symphony Way housing project site for an inspection when she was killed while sitting in her white BMW on February 16, 2023, according to the Daily Voice. Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, says that the arrest of the suspect should send a strong message to other criminals that they will be hunted down and brought to book. He adds that the arrested suspect will appear at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on the charges of murder and attempted murder.
On Monday the Department of Health has recorded three more positive cases of mumps and one death. The efforts to curb the spread of this infectious disease are ongoing in the affected communities around South Africa. The health department says they are working with various provinces and other stakeholders on this matter.
Currently, the department is embarking on health education with funeral parlours on how to handle the human remains of deceased due to suspected and confirmed mpox cases. Anyone can contract mpox regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation or race. How the public can identify the symptoms of the mpox are due to any symptoms of rashes or sores and feeling unwell. The Western Cape’s Akhona Zondo, a Grade 12 learner at Simon’s Town High School, and Aimee Stollie, a Grade 12 learner at Môrester Akademie in Vanrhynsdorp, are spending their June holidays on along the South African coastline aboard the SA Agulhas II. The SEAmester programme is usually offered to postgraduate students, but they have introduced Marine Sciences for Grades 10 to 12 from 2020. Led by University of Cape Town professor Isabelle Ansorge, they made available two spaces for high school learners. The Daily Voice reports that the young ladies will be learning about various marine sciences-related concepts through lectures by experts in their respective fields and will also do hands-on research along with the other students and scientists. They will have evening sessions that will include astronomy.
Air Pollution is now the second leading global risk factor for deaths in children under 5 years old after malnutrition. That study report was revealed by Unicef Health online, which states these deaths occurred in 2021 during the hype of the global Covid19 pandemic as well. The online site information also revealed over 70% of these deaths take place within the first month of a baby’s life. Noel Ruiters has more on this story.
Tragically, most of these deaths occur in Sub Saharan Africa and South Asia. Unicef says as a global society, we must reduce overall emissions for the health of our children. In the study revealed produced for the first time in partnership with UNICEF, the report finds that children under five years old are especially vulnerable, with health effects including premature birth, low birth weight, asthma and lung diseases. Lastly Unicef also pleaded to save lives, we need to prioritize children’s environmental health and address the sources of air pollution.
