Since the beginning of June, the Western Cape Mobility Department has reported 19 crashes on the province’s roads. They say that this winter will bring winds, rain, flooding, and fog. Head of Communications, Muneera Allie says that tailgating, speeding and high beams are not only problematic in general, but these driver behaviours also present unique challenges in dark, wet and misty weather conditions on Western Cape roads. Winter driving can be unpredictable and demanding, requiring drivers to be extra vigilant and prepared for various challenges, such as flooding and poor visibility.
On Sunday, they arrested the suspect for the double murder of bread delivery workers at the Delft Day Hospital. Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, says that the investigating team followed up on information that the suspect was at the Delft Day Hospital for medical treatment after he was involved in a scuffle with community members who accused him of robbery. It is alleged that the shooting of the bread truck drivers is connected to extortion by gangs in the area. He will be seen in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
On Tuesday, the Deputy President of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, was a victim of a kidnapping in Cape Town. The UDM Party leader Bantu Holomisa confirmed the incident, saying it took place while Kwankwa was travelling to the Cape Town International Airport on his way to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration that took place earlier today at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Mr Kwankwa was kept against his will and the kidnappers demanded a R10,000 ransom for his safe return. The Party's Mr. Holomisa confirmed the party had to pay a ransom to secure Mr. Kwankwa’s release. The UDM paid the ransom and Mr Kwankwa was safely released, although he was shaken and traumatized. All his belongings, including his vehicle, were stolen. The UDM added in the media statement the stolen vehicle was later found abandoned. The UDM says it is saddened by the incident. Mr Kwankwa's vehicle and personal belongings were taken during the kidnapping aswell.
