Andrea Dowie, an entrepreneur, came to our studio to show us her business, which is turning one this month. Creative Hair is not only a natural hair business, but they also provide manicures, pedicures, and facials. The young woman offers training too. She has a vision and is collaborating with her partner, Madeniya May, who works in the Bishop Lavis area.
"I am the small business owner of a hairdresser, and I am doing mostly natural hairstyling. I do the training because some young people do not have the means to follow up on their dreams, or they have a passion but there is no motivation, and that is where I come in," says Dowies.
"i am a frontrunner for self-care and taking time out for yourself. When you get to busy, it can take a toll on you. Somewhere along the line, you need to bring it back and take care of yourself. When I find myself doing nothing or just having a moment in which I can relax, I like to have foot soaks. I love to soak my feet with a cup of Rooibos tea with lemon in it," says Dowie.
"There isn't much youth my age that is interested in the work that Andrea and I do. It is actually a challenge, can be fun and it keeps you busy," says Madeniya May.
She adds that there is a lot of unemployment in this area, so if you want to start your own business, then doing hairdressing courses and attending the workshops is actually a good thing for the youth.

Elastoplast, the number one plaster brand in South Africa, has teamed up with the SA Red Cross, and together they’re teaching children aged 10 to 13, upskilling them with solid first aid training. Brand Manager for Elastoplast, Nokuthula Khumal, says the SA Red Cross Society’s First Aid Schools Project is an existing initiative started in 2022.
Khumalo says the reasoning behind why Elastoplastas is so committed to the project is that they inherently believe everyone should learn essential first aid skills.
