An apartment that collapsed in George is now the result of 30 dying. This is the second week of rescue operations. Municipality spokesperson, Chantel Edwards, said the primary focus continues to be on rescue efforts.

Edwards says that they urgently request families who have lost contact with their loved ones to come to the George Civic Centre in York Street. This will enable the Department of Social Development to collect detailed and precise information, ensuring that all records are accurately documented.

The Salt River Markets traders are being evicted for social housing development, according to the City of Cape Town. A court-ordered eviction could have been avoided, says activist lawyer Igshaan Higgins. He says that the city is just following through on its commitment to explore relocating the traders to a suitable location.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Carl Pophaim says that, in line with their agenda to build a City of Hope by enabling much more social housing in well-located areas, the Salt River Market development will include 300 social housing units.

Higgins says that many of these individuals have operated businesses at the Salt River Market for over half a century, with their staff now facing unemployment. He hopes that the city will keep its expensive and overzealous lawyers at bay while trying to find an amicable solution through negotiation and/or mediation.

Dimitri Cupido changed from a drug addict and criminal to a sober, clean man. Dimitri cycled from Athlone to Claremont just to attend the U-turn Homeless Ministries services. He grew up in a strict household and when he received some corporal punishment from his father, he started to look for love in the wrong places. He got involved in drugs and turned to crime to maintain his drug addiction. He says that he used tik (methamphetamine) and heroin.

From his teens to his late 20s, he was in prison. He says that he grew up in prison. U-turn Homeless Ministries says that their four-phase model has been refined over the years, and more than 90% of U-turn graduates remain sober, employed, and housed long-term. U-turn tracks three outcomes, sobriety, employment, and housing, and each outcome is implemented across each phase along the continuum of care.

Dimitri remains sober, and his future looks better for him and his daughter. Dimitri is now the manager of the landscaping section of the ministry. He is also in charge of the nursery, along with his colleagues.

There is also a virtual event option, and tickets are available via Quicket.

The organisation can also be contacted via its website, homeless.org.za
