George Municipality has confirmed that the death toll in the building collapse is now eight. The municipality's spokesperson, Chantel Edwards, says that the contractor has now confirmed that the number of workers on site at the time of the collapse was 81. Thirty-seven workers have been retrieved from the rubble, a total of eight people has died, 16 people are in critical condition, six people face life-threatening conditions; and seven people sustained minor injuries. The Ruyterwacht Action Committee held a protest picket at the Zerelda Steyn Hall today. According to a statement released, Communicare has been selling off rental stock that forms part of its mandated Social Housing scope to property developers at a fraction of the cost offered to current tenants. Suddenly tenants who have resided in these dwellings for decades have been issued eviction orders by both Communicare and the property developers.
Communicare has embarked on an asset disposal program that directly affects the residents of Ruyterwacht. On May 18 a school in Milnerton, Capriccio Private School, will be joining U-turn's 'A Night on the Streets’ campaign. The non-profit aims to give homeless people the skills to overcome homelessness. Chief communications officer Valerie Govender says that these young people will sleep in their school playground from 6pm until 6am the next morning to support the homeless in the neighbourhood.
Capriccio Private School’s Principal, Rosina Lee-Warden says that homelessness is a real problem in our country. Their learners have a profound understanding of the importance of being kind to others. This campaign presents an invaluable opportunity for their students to not only learn about an important social issue but also to actively contribute towards its alleviation. There are at least 14,000 homeless people in the greater Cape Town area says the Western Cape government.
The latest African Youth Survey’s Special Report on South Africa says that:
- two-thirds (63%) of youth aged 18 to 24 years old say they are registered to vote
- under half (49%) say they are likely to vote later this month
- sixteen percent say they won’t vote
- and 35% haven’t yet decided
Youth in South Africa are now also divided on the suitability of Western-style democracies in Africa.
Almost half (48%) of youth are leaning towards emigrating from the country in the next three years. Corruption was seen to be the top reason to emigrate, this figure doubled from 19% in 2022 to 38% in 2024, the study found.
Economic reasons was second on the list, employment opportunities (37%), education opportunities (30%), and lack of basic needs and services (22%) seen as contributing factors. The youth are very concerned about their future in this country with lack of employment opportunities (82% “very concerned”), and concerns surrounding gender-based violence (81% “very concerned”) being identified.
