Elsies River’s very own Ziya Adakarie took gold at the South African National Figure Skating Championship at the beginning of the month. Her father, Rijaadh Adakarie, says that Ziya’s connection to ice skating started young. At five years old on a visit to the Ice Rink in Goodwood she loved the ice. At 7 years old Ziya joined a figure-skating club at Grandwest called the Black Panther Figure Skating Club.
She then joined the Western Cape Development Programme. She the progressed to the South African Figure Skating Association in 2022 and she was then selected to represent the Western Province in a huge competition called The Cape Inter-provincial (CIP) Figure Skating Competition. In 2023 Ziya took first-place at the podium achieving the gold medal at her club. Her dream and ultimate goal is to represent South Africa at the Olympics.
The City of Cape Town is investigating reports of a low magnitude earthquake that took place yesterday. According to volcanodiscovery.com tremors were felt by an unconfirmed earthquake in South Africa, 14 kilometers south of Cape Town at about 5.39pm.
One resident says that it sounded like a rumble and like a thud could be felt which came from the ground. It lasted around two to five seconds. It felt as if a big truck had driven into our building. They were on the first floor, and they could feel it.
Sameeykah Bodkin was crowned Mini Miss South Africa 2024 over the weekend. She received awards for: best themed wear, most photogenic, best ramp model and best interview. The Atlantis beauty was also crowned Mini Miss Universe South Africa 2024 in Turkey.
The winner receives make-up, age-appropriate toys, glass crockery and a crown worth approximately R3 000. This Protea Park girl is said to be talkative, vibrant and an outspoken little girl. Her mom says she was intrigued by the pageantry scene while watching YouTube videos and ultimately decided it’s what she wants to do. She has only been in the industry for five months.
Last night during a glitzy event at the classic Labia Theatre in Gardens Cape Town, actor Earl Hendricks premiered his short movie: Lost Hope. The movie is based on true life events. Hendricks is an actor from the Lavender Hill/Retreat area. He says that short film is a story of trauma, brotherhood, forgiveness, and the courage to confront one's past. He has been in the acting industry for a few years and recently worked on the Kyknet Telenovela Arendsvlei.
Hendricks also says that the movie is an exploration of the human spirit, of the battles we fight within ourselves, and the redemptive power of familial bonds. He also says he would like to showcase this film to the broader public and even schools and even make it onto bigger platforms in the film industry.
