A young man has lost his life outside a mall in Balvenie Avenue, Elsies River. Eugene Bull was a friendly fruit and vegetable vendor and was shot in the head on Sunday morning and passed away. There will be a memorial service for him on Wednesday the 27 March from 6 pm until 7pm. We spoke to Joshua Jackson about their project called the Community in Blue Patrollers and they are actively contributing to making a difference in Elsies River. If you would like to report any nefarious activity contact: Mr Jackson on 064 409 3614.
Jackson says that they are tackling crime in the Elsies River area by doing patrols on Fridays. There have been many patrols but they want to start using more of the other days as well as inviting people to join the Community in Blue. He says that they are happy with the support that they are getting from the Elsies River Community and are excited for more members to join. They are single-minded in their approach to crime. They wish to develop young people so that this crime situation does not repeat itself.
Over the weekend there was a mass iftaar endearingly called ‘Boeka innie Bo-Kaap'. The event takes place in Ramadaan and has grown over the years when people share a meal at sunset. Reverend Dr Allan Boesak, activist Sheikh Ebrahim Gabriels and Palestinian journalist Mansour Shouman all attended.
The community are all keeping the Palestinians in their prayers too. Wale and Rose streets in Bo-Kaap transformed into a massive table for all. Bo-Kaap Civic and Ratepayers Association chairperson Osman Shaboodien says that the boeka was born out of struggle for the heritage recognition of Bo-Kaap when the first street boeka was held by Bo-Kaap youth/Bo-Kaap Collective supported by the Bo-Kaap Civic and Mosques of Bo-Kaap. Mayor Geordin-Hill Lewis was also in attendance.
Some suburbs in Cape Town still need to meet Bingo. Bingo is the character that encourages children and adults to keep our streets clean. There are Bingo Bins all over the city, so that we can live in a hygienic and litter free environment. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis tells us more about keeping Cape Town clean with Bingo.
The Mayar says that Bingo is our mascot and they are now calling on the citizens to Bin It in the Bingo. Alderman Grant Twigg says that you should look out for their city wide campaign to bring Bingo to a school, intersection or public space near you. Their message is simple: never litter and always Bin It in the Bingo. Twigg says that you can keep Cape Town clean together.
A recent study on beach litter found that plastic items: foamed plastics and cigarette butts, accounted for 92% to 99% of litter items by number and 85% to 94% by mass. Food packets accounted for virtually all food packaging that was street litter.
The Mayor encourages citizens to keep our city sparkling, clean and fresh. Including our parks, public spaces, beaches, rivers and roads. Hill-Lewis says that we should all take pride in our city and show what is possible when we unite as Team Cape Town.
Change is easy:
- None of us should ever litter ourselves
- If you see someone else littering, then tell them not to do that
- Take a couple of seconds out of our day to pick up some litter when we see it
Alderman Grant Twigg says that together we can keep our communities clean. Let us stop illegal dumping.
