The Elsies River Community Policing Forum can confirm that there was a raid conducted in the The Range between 18:00 and 20:00 last night. Police searched the premises of a suspected drug dealer and they found 50 x 9mm rounds of ammunition and 486 mandrax tablets.
When they arrested a lady that was living on the residence, there was resistance, there was stone throwing and blocking by citizens. The police then proceeded to shoot rubber bullets. Sixteen-year-old Althea Adams lost her life at the scene. The victim's sister confirmed that it was Althea that passed away.
A number of people were injured, and police opened cases on behalf of the injured, to check if police acted lawfully, detectives and Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) were informed to come out to the crime scene.
The Elsies River Community Police Forum held a Prayer for Peace Walk in Sector 4 Clarke's Estate. Residents came out and joined in, to express their anger at the ongoing violence plaguing the community.
Gun violence and gun control is a major problem in the area, with young boys walking around with weapons and killing each other. The culture of the area needs to be evaluated and responded to with a long term plan. The police are working on getting the situation under control.
CPF spokesperson Imraan Mukaddam says that
The CPF /GBV/VEP/Spiritual crime prevention were hosted by the Kwasizabantu missionary on the Moreson farm in the Malmesbury area. Forty children from different schools in the Elsies River area went on an educational excursion. The children were taught about gender-based violence, human trafficking, teenage pregnancies and abstinence until marriage. The mission is about keeping people safe.
On the premises they run a program called CYPSA: The Concerned Young People of South Africa. This program is a rehabilitation and a detox section of the farm. After the people are clean, they try and reintegrate them into society by getting them work.
