Rodney Harris a fourteen-year-old from Clarke Estate in Elsies River, was shot multiple times in Greenwood Street, Adriaanse on Monday evening outside a local shop. The Grade 8 pupil attended Cravenby High School.

He was shot several times when he went to a Somali shop. The Daily Voice says that police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk says that SAPS members on duty received a complaint of shooting at the mentioned address. Upon their arrival, they found the deceased with gunshot wounds to the body.

The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, who attended the scene. The Elsies River Community Police Forum (CPF) say they are dealing with an epidemic of gun violence. CPF spokesperson, Imraahn Mukaddam, says they need an emergency response to get all illegal guns off the 
streets. The community needs maximum responses by SAPS and law enforcement. 

 

 

Yesterday all charges of trafficking and kidnapping were withdrawn against Phumza Sigaqa in the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court. NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says that the investigation could not positively link Sigaqa to Joshlin’s disappearance. He says that they can confirm that charges have been withdrawn at this stage and it will depend on what comes from the investigation if charges against her could be reinstated.

The charges had to be withdrawn as there is no evidence linking her at this stage. Provincial police commissioner Thembisile Patekile says that this does not mean the investigation ends here. The investigation continues where they have two ultimate goals – to find the child and to secure a conviction and sentence. That is why if the court withdraws charges against one accused, they respect the decision as they still have three others in court facing charges.

When it comes to the public losing control of themselves, she says that they cannot condone public violence. Their main function is to prevent crime and now for the community to attack their members, unprovoked, is unacceptable. She has directed that an investigation be done, and a case of public violence is being investigated. The IOL reports that Appolis, Van Rhyn, and Smith remain in custody until May 13 for their next court appearance. 

 

The bail application for five of the seven suspects linked to the murders of rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and Tebello ‘TibzMotsoane were heard in the Durban Magistrate Court earlier today.  Forbes and Motsoane were gunned down outside a Durban restaurant in February 2023.

In their last court appearance more charges against the five accused were added. The five suspects are: Lindokuhle Mkhwanazi, Lindani Ndimande, Eddie Myeza, Mziwethemba Gwabeni and Lindokuhle Ndimande and they are expected to appear for their formal bail application.

They are facing 12 charges, these include murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and money laundering. The state alleges in the charge sheet that Gwabeni is the alleged co-ordinator and that Gwabeni orchestrated and facilitated the payment of money to the other accused.

According to the Business Day, South African citizens are feeling a pinch in their budget when it comes to essential food items since October 2020. A new study revealed the fact that maize meal porridge has increased from R550 to R730 and increased by 32.9%. This increase is happening while minimum wage isn’t in line with inflation, the rate moved from R20.67 to R25.42 per hour. The study highlights the cost of food rising yet the slower growth of wages will especially affect low-income households.
