There have been developments to the case with clothing pieces, allegedly stained with blood, were discovered in an open field during random searches late Saturday night according to police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie. He says that the clothing will be sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis. The search
continues and they are making use of drones and search and rescue dogs. No arrests have been made.
Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton Mckenzie is offering a reward of R250 000 for information that leads to missing Joshlin Smith. Minister of Police Beki Cele says politics aside, the young girl must be found and police resources are still in place.
Action Society’s director of Community Safety Ian Cameron says that they are worried about the quality of new recruits at the South African Police Service’s Training Academy. In the last 12 months at the Philippi Training Academy there has been a major investigation because over 300 recruits bought their way into the college and certain recruits were dealing with drugs inside the college. Some of these students were even linked to gangs outside the college on different parts of the Cape Flats.
They were allowed to come back to the college but due to public pressure, Action Society managed to get them out. He is concerned that people in management are unqualified for the positions that they hold.
He is also concerned that the police at the college are wasting money. For example they hired busses that took people to a parade in December of 2023 at the cost of R300 000 for Minister of Police Beki Cele. They spent over R76 000 on furniture for one office.
He says that if it wasn’t for Solidarity then the conditions of the training function within the South African Police Service and the horrible conditions that police work under would never of been exposed. Their building in Pretoria was reported on and the entire building had to be evacuated.
He spoke about a dehumanizing situation that has gotten little attention in the media and no one has received accountability for what happened. Female recruits were made to sleep outside without blankets because they complained about sexual harassment. They were also made to roll around in sewage. They are calling for steps to be taken regards to this matter.
