In Kraaifontein 500 units of the drug called Khat was seized by the Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services. The Western Cape member of the executive council (MEC) for Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie says over the weekend the officers found the drugs in vehicle checkpoints and he is proud of their provincial traffic officers for their dedication to the people of this province.

This success is well-deserved, as they work tirelessly to keep our roads and communities safe. Officers also arrested 98 suspects of which 65 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 13 for possession of fraudulent documentation, and five for reckless and negligent driving. 

Khat is a flowering plant most commonly found in countries of the African Horn and the Arabian Peninsula. Khat is classified by the World Health Organization as a possible drug of abuse. It is estimated that 5 to 10 million people use the substance. It is predominately used in Yemen, Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. The effects of the drug are as follows: 

  1. Dilated pupils  
  2. Increased heart rate and blood pressure 
  3. Long-term use can precipitate permanent tooth darkening (of a greenish tinge) 
  4. Susceptibility to ulcers  
  5. Diminished sex drive 

Cape Town became home to two British nationals who fled their home country. Interpol, UK authorities, the National Task Force and the Hawks were all searching for the mother and son. Caroline Sevier – 51 and Callum Gower – 27 were busted in Constantia and Sea Point on January 26 says police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. Mathe says that the 27-year-old was arrested after a warrant for his arrest was issued on charges of dealing in drugs, money laundering, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of a dangerous weapon and pointing of an object believed to be a firearm. The 51-year-old was arrested on charges of dealing in drugs and money laundering.  

UK detectives says that Gower and his mother had been accused of running drug houses in Hastings since 2014. Police confiscated R552 565 in cash and drugs valued at over R9 million during busts at his home. They are both applying for bail and will be seen at the end of this month. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says there is an extradition request for both of them and the State will strenuously oppose their bail application. 

In Sea Point a lady was allegedly robbed of her cellphone and this has become a trend in the area. The incident was caught on camera with a video. Sea Point City Improvement District chairperson, Jacques Weber, confirmed the incident and said the alleged robber was arrested. Weber says that the lady was walking. One guy stole her phone. She chased him up Hall Road. Members of the public saw what was going on.

They assisted in chasing and caught the suspect, and as the video shows, they gave him a few hidings, they smacked him. You could hear the woman, she was a foreigner. He says that the incident shocked her and she said ‘Stop it, I forgive him!’, but ultimately, the cellphone was recovered and a few minutes later he was arrested and taken to the SAPS and a criminal case was opened by the lady. The 30-year-old will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court soon.  

 

The South African Police Service has confirmed that they have arrested an individual for the fatal shootings of two people in Owen Road, Elsies River on Wednesday afternoon. The matter is being investigated by the Anti-Gang unit and two charges of murder has been filed.

 

Popular known as the hubbly bubbly is very dangerous for your health says experts. According to research done by SABC reporters most young people started smoking Hubbly Bubblies because cigarettes became very expensive during Lockdown. It is also deemed cool in popular society. Professor Lekan Ayo-Yusuf from the Sefako Makgatho University of Health Sciences says that putting that into your lungs with all those toxins is very harmful. 

The Professor says that young people need to realise that it is harmful. Young people are using this in terms of social status. The volume of smoke that the hubbly creates is not only harmful for the smoker but also for the people walking into the room.

The country Cape Verde is the first sub-Saharan African country to completely remove Malaria from their population in 50 years. They have gone a few years without a single case. Malaria was a major contributor to the loss of lives in the island nation. Cape Verde’s Health Minister Dr Filomena Gonçalves told the BBC that this success reflects the hard work and dedication of countless health professionals, collaborators, communities and international partners. It is a testimony to what can be achieved through collective commitment to improving public health.
