Criminals in this country see kidnappings as easy money. This a reflection of the ease of conducting such crime in South Africa. This country is considered one of the world’s most unequal places to live with statistics saying that two-thirds of its 21 million youths are currently unemployed. The youth make up almost half of the population. High cost of living makes things difficult in this economy and this makes room for corruption within and out of government. Desperate people, with no or little education, turn to crime because that is all they know.
South Africa was granted an order that Israel must stop killing people in the Gaza regions – Palestine. Israel is now planning to expand its military operations in Rafah and the South African government lodged another urgent request to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to intervene on Monday. The area is a shelter for 1.5 million people and President Cyril Ramaphosa says that South Africa has made a request at the ICJ on whether the offensive by Israel requires another order to stop them. Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Naledi Pandor says that people all over the world have hailed South Africa for taking Israel to the ICJ to stop its attacks on civilians in the Palestinian territory. South Africa will not abandon its cause to fight for the rights of the Palestinians. More than 28,000 people were killed in Gaza since the attacks started in October last year. If Israel continues and attacks Rafah this action will be in direct violation of the court order that was issued on January 26.
In the Western Cape High Court has ordered the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) to hand over information on various banking institutions’ Risk Management and Compliance Programmes to the Sekunjalo Group. The groups bank accounts were closed down because they were a ‘reputational and business risk’. The Sekunjalo Group was informed that it was due to associated negative publicity which arose from the Mpati Commission and its report.
Judge Thulare has ordered that Absa Ltd, First Rand Bank Ltd, Investec Bank Ltd, Nedbank Limited and Standard Bank of South Africa Limited issue their programmes within 20 days. Sekunjalo chairman Dr Iqbal Survé says that the outcome is a significant victory. They have maintained from the beginning that there has been no basis for any of their accounts to be closed, as there is no wrongdoing by any of their companies.
The decision to close their accounts has been motivated by political interference and is tantamount to economic sabotage in an effort to destroy the country’s biggest black-owned media house, along with other Sekunjalo-owned entities. The judge says that the court finds that the applicants have established their right to the information sought. Fairness and equity, and our constitutional values of openness and transparency, favour that the applicants be granted access to the reports which the respondent banks provided to the FIC as regards reputational and business risk as well as anti-bribery legal and regulatory framework.
According to the dictionary a government is a group of people with the authority to govern a country or state; a particular ministry in office. The South African government has not eased the debt burden the citizens face with each new government. South Africa’s debt burden has multiplied in recent years.
- In 2006 total debt was a modest R500 billion
- In 2011 has grown to R1 trillion
- In 2022 it has escalated to R4.7 trillion
- And is expected to approach a ridiculous R6 trillion by 2025
The major reasons for this are the challenges of power shortages, stagnation in growth, high unemployment rates, overspending and lack of fiscal consolidation. The only solution is to curb overspending by people in government, high growth and inflation. Experts says that the country is in a debt trap.
If the government is considered a business, why can’t the government make a profit and pay all the debt that they have accumulated over the years?
