The Health and Allied Workers Indaba Trade Union (HAITU) says that South Africa's Health Department is misleading the citizens by making them believe lies about the crisis of unemployed doctors in the country. This is HAITU's response to the Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla statement about how government is unable to give doctors work because of a lack of money. IOL reports that HAITU's general secretary Lerato Mthunzi says that the health department must be strongly condemned for shamelessly peddling lies and for scapegoating junior doctors and blaming them for their own joblessness. It is frankly a disgrace that in a country like South Africa, where we are in desperate need of qualified doctors in our public healthcare facilities, we are unable to provide newly qualified doctors with the necessary training that is needed to allow them to continue to serve the public and the community at large.

The Western Cape has been in an unending battle to control the fires this summer. The Worcester fire has discovered three lions that were being held illegally in the Fairy Glen Nature Reserve. The National Council of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has rescued three lions that were severely burnt in the area. NSPCA Chief Operations Officer Grace de Lange says that one male and two female lions were left vulnerable to the raging wildfires, resulting in burns that inflicted brutal suffering. She said the lions sustained serious burns to their paws, eyes, mouths, and chest, with secondary infections, they have been treated by a vet and after serious consideration they had to be euthanised to prevent further suffering. The NSPCA are taking into consideration what their next steps should be to ensure those responsible take accountibility.

Palestine's national soccer team will be playing local teams at the Athlone stadium on the 11 and 18 February 2024. Cape Town's Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says that the City of Cape Town supports the SA Football Association’s (Safa) Football 4 Humanity event and we should all show support for peace and justice in Palestine by attending this month's exhibition soccer matches.  Hill-Lewis says that this is an important, symbolic way of supporting the two-state solution and the full recognition of Palestinian statehood. The city will be waiving the rental hire costs for the stadium and providing R400 000 in event support services, including traffic and waste management. Sport has played an important role in our democratic journey, and he says that he is proud that the City of Cape Town is partnering with SAFA to host the Palestinian national football team.
