SA Human Rights Commission Chairperson Chris Nissen says that while living in Bishop Lavis, on June 16, 1976, he was with his reverend. He says that Elsies River was a different place back then, and when they got the message of what happened in Soweto,. He saw the devastating effects of June 16. The one sad thing about the contribution of the class of June 16 is that coloured people's history has been written out of the history of this country.

"On June 17, 18 people died; on June 18, 30 people died; and on June 19, 25 young people of color died. More than 100 young people of color died during that period. If you go to the archives and the museum in Soweto, you will see all their names," says Nissen.

Do not let your history be written out by a manufactured history. The message Nissen wants to give to young people in this country, but particularly to the coloured youth, is: be proud of your country. Your parents made a contribution towards democracy and liberation.

"We are all part of a liberation movement. Let your history not be written out. For the young people celebrating Youth Day: Rise Up. Rise up in your education. Rise up in your profession. Rise up so that you can lift your community. When you rise up, you bring your community with you. Rise up in nonracialism. Rise up and say that I am South African," says Nissen.
