Cape Town’s Carbon Smart Skills Development Programme is making strides that empowers jobless women. They train women in eco-conscious skills, and the curriculum includes:

  1. green building concepts
  2. small to medium-sized enterprise development and
  3. soft skills for the workplace

An interesting concept is that they are using alien invasive species for environmentally friendly building materials. This initiative is equipping women with skills to succeed within the growing green economy, with the aim that this will benefit the community as a whole.

In September last year, the project started with its first participants, meticulously picking thirty women from various city districts.

These include:

  • Garden Village
  • Maitland
  • Langa
  • Philippi
  • Lentegeur
  • and Dunoon

They are granted three years of employment with the City. They focus their training at the Carbon Smart Training Academy in Maitland.
